If you have good plans for acquiring a drilling rig anytime soon, it would be best that you familiarize yourself first with the types of drilling rigs for sale in Australia.

This way you’d know what to look for first and get good value for your money, as opposed to leaving things out on luck.

So, without further ado, what is a drilling rig used for?

Drilling rigs are solid structures and they are used to house equipment for a drilling project such as cables, pipes, derricks and drill bits. Every one of them plays a crucial role in extracting important commodities from underneath the ground such as petroleum.

There are two categories for drill rigs, they are either offshore or land. Offshore drilling, as itself suggests, is done at the very bottom of the ocean floor, whereas land-based drilling works are done on land.

Drilling rigs are not for the exclusive of the petroleum exploration industry, there are many other applications for it, too. For instance, they play a major role in the construction industry and are used primarily in building foundation construction for bridges, roadbeds, and airport constructions. Such construction projects require no less than extremely strong foundations.

They are also used in the mining industry and water drilling projects.  Offshore oil rigs are designed in such a way that they will work in many different locations and differing environments.

  • Movable drilling structures that come with bottom supports, these are what we refer to as the jackups. They have columnar or open-truss legs which are intending to provide the structural support needed by the main deck area or hull.
  • Unlike jackups, you can’t move/relocate platforms since by virtue of their design they are not supposed to be mobile. It is typical for platform drill rig systems to be made out of cement or steel.  And when it comes to developing new water wells, this drill rig system is most preferred to use by most contractors.
  • Then we also have floaters or semisubmersible drilling units.  With the use of hollow columns or giant pontoons, these drill systems stay afloat. So much so that when you fill its columns or pontoons with water, they will be submerging to the desired depth. This type of drilling rigs for sale in Australia are most reliable to use when working on rough seas, but they are also ideal for use in drilling new wells.

The majority of rig setups we have in the country rely on several systems to help get the job done right the first time:

  1. The hoisting system, we refer to this as drawworks or derricks.
  2. The drive group, this is consisting of chains, motors, and compounds.
  3. The system of the drill string, a system of pumps, kelly, pits, and return lines.
  4. The well control equipment.

There are various reasons why we drill wells. If you are involved in a drilling project to identify new reservoirs, we will term this as an exploratory well. As for the development wells, they are all about working on already proven oil fields and maximizing the amount of oil being produced from that area.

When you hear something about a drilling project done the traditional way, it only signifies that the well will be drilled down, straight down vertically directed to the underground deposit of oil.

It is important to be aware that the conventional way of drilling will not always yield your expected best results. Most of the time, drilling contractors would work their way down vertically to the ground, and then they would make a sharp, horizontal turn. Such a maneuver would necessitate the use of specialized types of drill bits.
